Zlín Public Transport Adopts Contactless Payments

Public transport in Zlín and Otrokovice has adopted a contactless payment system, allowing passengers to pay for tickets using bank cards, mobile phones, or smartwatches. This update reflects an ongoing effort to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and provide greater convenience for travelers.

The new system uses Herman validators with integrated Feig EMV contactless card readers, operated by Switchio payment solutions. Transactions are processed through ČSOB Bank, acting as the acquiring institution. As part of the project, 340 validators were installed across the entire fleet of the Zlín-Otrokovice Transportation Company (DSZO). Once payment is made, the electronic ticket is linked directly to the payment platform (card, phone, or watch), completely eliminating the need for printed tickets. During inspections, passengers simply present the same device used for payment.

Significant Savings Expected

The introduction of contactless payments is expected to yield considerable savings. In 2023, 9,527 kg of coins were collected from ticket machines, incurring substantial logistical and operational costs. Additionally, over 3.6 million paper tickets were sold, which not only impacted the operating budget but also strained the environment.

Implementing a digital fare collection system is a key step toward optimising public transportation. Electronic payments reduce cash handling costs and minimise the need for paper tickets, bringing direct savings and ecological benefits.“

Ivo Herman | Managing director of Future Technologies.

We’ve implemented cashless payment systems worldwide—from Ukraine to the United States—with a strong presence in Europe. In the Czech Republic, we now serve over 90% of regional cities, and Zlín and Olomouc were the last to adopt this innovation. For our company, rooted in the Zlín region, this project is especially meaningful. It’s an honor to contribute to our home’s development, simplifying and improving travel for everyone. Being part of this transformation is a proud milestone for us.

Future Plans and Expansion

DSZO plans to continuously evaluate the efficiency of the new system and is considering further expansions. Potential features include introducing a dynamic pricing system for greater fare flexibility or integrating with other regional transportation services.

The implementation of contactless payments in Zlín and Otrokovice public transport is not only a technological leap forward but also a significant move toward digitalisation and sustainability. This project sets new standards and contributes to the development of modern infrastructure aligned with contemporary needs.
